I pledge to:

  • Support the leadership and solutions of people most impacted by the
affordability and displacement crises, especially working-class
    communities and communities of color.

  • Challenge people who are imposing solutions on working-class communities
and communities of color. I will call on them to follow communities’
    lead instead.

  • Fight alongside people facing displacement and eviction to stay
    in their homes.

  • Fight for new housing that truly meets the needs and incomes of
working-class communities and communities of color, not accept vast
amounts of luxury and high-end housing as the solution.

  • Fight for the power and voice of working-class communities and
communities of color to win development and policies that stabilize
    their communities.

I fully agree with and support your pledge, but after this weekend, I have deep reservations about supporting City Life/Vida Urbana. Saturday’s direct action was very distressing for me. I attended Yimbytown in search of strategies for fighting exclusionary zoning (i.e., the process whereby land use laws become tools for economic segregation — such that poor and working-class residents are confined to specific areas of a community, or kept out of that community altogether). Other attendees came with similar motiviations. For that effort in pursuit of economic justice, we’re greeted by 250 activists telling us how much we suck. Thank you for that.

I reached out to CL/VU in an attempt to explain my reasons for attending Yimbytown. The response I received implied that (a) I was making nothing more than an old argument about supply and demand, and (b) I lacked an understanding of structural oppression. Exclusionary zoning isn’t a form of structural oppression? Wow. Just wow. I have no idea how to respond to that.

The whole experience has left me hurt, disappointed, and sad.
