Sign the petition: Councilor Flaherty - Full Council Vote on Jim Brooks Act Now!

On March 6, over 350 supporters attended the Boston City Council's hearing on the Jim Brooks Stabilization Act and pressed our councilors to pass it immediately.  Right now, the Act is sitting in the Government Operations committee. We call on the chair of this committee, Councilor Flaherty, to pledge to support this Act and bring it to a full City Council vote now.

Dear Councilor Flaherty:

Forced displacement is one of the most significant crises facing our City, especially as it affects working class people of color.  The Jim Brooks Stabilization Act offers protection for homeowners facing eviction after foreclosure, and it informs tenants facing displacement of their rights under existing state law.  This is an extremely modest bill. We call on you to support it.

We believe you are in a critical position to ensure passage of this bill:

  • At Right to the City's community forum in October 2015, you indicated support for Just Cause Eviction.
  • You are the chair of the committee tasked with studying the Jim Brooks Stabilization Act.
  • You are the only one of four at-large councilors who has not committed to passing the Jim Brooks Stabilization Act.

You can help thousands of people by supporting this Act and bringing it out of committee for a vote on the floor.  Thank you in advance for your support.

EN ESPAÑOL (in Spanish)

Estimado Concejal Flaherty:

With the inflated rental market this tote of protection for renters only makes sense.

As someone who has suffered a no-fault eviction for no reason other than the landlord wanting to sell the unit and clear us out as tenants, I can say that this housing market is certifiably out of control and taking a toll on the people and the character of our city. For my wife and I, who have always paid our rent on time and not had any problems with the landlord, only have 30 days to find a new apartment to rent on our income is damn near impossible. We are both full time employed, working within city limits, and yet we cannot afford to live here anymore. This policy would have at least protected us a little bit, maybe even just to give us more time to find a new home and start over… which is why the PEOPLE of Boston can’t wait for the politicians to dither along any longer before protecting us. I look forward to the passage of the Jim Brooks Stabilization Law as a first step towards addressing the housing crisis we have.

As a former resident of Boston, it’s my pleasure to describe that vibrant, diverse and wonderful olde city. However, when it comes to the rampant poverty and out of control rent and public transportation system, I am ashamed to tell friends how woefully behind Boston is…
